Substance Abuse Statistics Harris County Texas
Despite marijuana being the most commonly used illicit drug in the area, overdose deaths in Harris County have increased by 78% from 2016 to 2021, with opioids and methamphetamine being the primary substances involved[1]. This trend highlights the need for greater attention and resources to address substance abuse in the county.
The impact of substance abuse on Harris County communities is significant. Drug possession offenses accounted for 33% of new felony cases filed in Texas in 2019[2]. From 2010 to 2016, Harris County saw a stable number of overdose-related deaths ranging from 450 to 618 per year[3]. However, the number of opioid overdose deaths in Texas has steadily increased, rising from 4,154 deaths in 2020 to 4,831 deaths in 2021[4]. This trend is concerning and underscores the need for effective prevention and treatment programs to combat the opioid epidemic.
Various indicators have tracked drug-related trends in Houston and Harris County since 1989[5]. The Substance Use Surveillance Team in Harris County conducts surveillance and analyzes data on fatal and non-fatal overdoses to determine trends and drug use patterns[7]. These efforts are critical in identifying emerging drug trends and developing targeted interventions to address substance abuse in Harris County communities.
