Substance Abuse Statistics Goliad County Texas
Substance abuse is a pressing issue in the county, with data from the 2008-2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health revealing high rates of past-year alcohol use disorder and illicit drug use disorder among residents[1]. Between 2020 and 2021, the population of Goliad County decreased by 6.51%, and the median household income grew from $50,000 to $52,335[2]. Despite the decline in population, substance abuse remains a significant concern in the county, with several commonly abused substances contributing to the issue.
Commonly abused substances in Goliad County include alcohol, marijuana, prescription opioids, and methamphetamine. Prescription opioids, in particular, have been a growing concern in recent years, with an estimated 4 to 6 percent of those who misuse prescription opioids transitioning to heroin[3].
Additionally, about 80 percent of people who use heroin first misused prescription opioids[3]. These substances, along with others, contribute to the high rates of substance abuse in Goliad County, as reported by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health[5].
Efforts to address substance abuse in Goliad County include outreach, screening, assessment, and referral (OSAR) programs[5]. These programs provide information about substance use services to individuals in need and connect them with appropriate resources. Additionally, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health provides estimates of substance use and mental illness at the national, state, and substate levels, allowing for a better understanding of the scope of substance abuse in Goliad County[4]. While substance abuse remains a significant issue in the county, these efforts to address it offer hope for those struggling with addiction and their loved ones.
